The new Gmail - organizational emails going to Promotional

Options

Gmail is rolling out their new email design which automatically segments messages into Primary, Social and Promotions.

In my opinion Promotions is one step up from Spam...it is travel bargains, Amazon deals, sales, and unfortunately also includes non-profits e-communications (all communications I have signed up for but usually go through rather quickly with my delete button). While I know each individual user can tweak these settings, I am concerned that many users will let the defaults take over and leave their inbox with the sorting Gmail has assigned.

Are their any tips to get our emails into the Primary section rather than promotions?

The best way to get your emails in the Primary category is to white list the emails you want to keep or move the email from Promotions to the Primary category. Best way right now is to drag email from promotions to primary and Gmail learns this and starts filtering into Primary.

I haven't seen anything that shows exactly how Google is categorizing/filtering the emails, but they seem to be using emails with the unsubscribe link. The good news is it's also filtering Groupons and other important emails like ones from your children's schools. So people still have a reason to check that tab, but it still pushes the emails further from point of focus.

This marketing person (see link below) had a good idea, with educating your email subscribers with how to check for your email and get it pushed into the primary category.
