Is this email legit?

Options
Some external customers received an email giving them an opportunity to opt out of future emails - the link to do so takes them to www.updatemyemailaddress.com -- many customers are asking if this is a legitimate email address or a phishing attempt as the URL is unbranded. Is this the way it's supposed to look?

Hey RJ. I've sent your question out to some teams here at Blackbaud and will let you know what I learn. I wouldn't use the link until I confirm its legitimacy.
  • thank you, Holly. I am trying to get through to Raiser's Edge support but have been on hold for quite some time. Are they still open? :)

Phone support it experiencing some hold times right now. However, chat support has almost no wait time. You can get to it by clicking this link: https://www.blackbaud.com/support/needhelp.aspx
  • I just loaded that URL in an incognito instance of Chrome, and it just said "are you sure you want to unsubscribe from this email list?" It was clearly not referring to any specific email list because I typed in the URL manually into a sandboxed isntance of my web browser. This is almost certainly a phishing attempt.
  • This email was sent by an EmailFinder process, after records were submitted, to help confirm if the email addresses found would actually like to receive messages from the organization.  Please see the following Knowledgebase article for more details:

What is EmailFinder and how to use this service in The Raiser's Edge 7?

Really?  WOW!  We bought a bunch of email addresses from EmailFinder a couple of years ago and then found that they are essentially worthless because they can't be classified as opt-in (which places like Constant Contact won't touch with a 10-foot pole).  If this is the mechanism Blackbaud uses to confirm those email addresses it's really VERY bad because it does look exactly like a phishing attempt.  This pushes EmailFinder, in my opinion, off the edge of worthless and into the abyss of actually dangerous and harmful for an organization that might use it.

  • I completely agree!
  • Yes, this email caused quite a stir amongst our "constituents"  given the URL they were directed to (updatemyemailaddress.co,)

Nothing about this email makes it seem anything other than phishing. it took quite a bit of discussion and searching to realize this was EmailFinder. The associate who kicked it off did not realize this is what the process would do. I don't know the entire workflow but if there is not an "email preview" step where you're sent a copy of the email along with a count of emails being sent, then I believe there is an opportunity for improvement with this service.
