Overlapping dates on Employment Relationships

Options

Has anyone overcome the issue of how to show someone getting a new role at an Organization without leaving their existing role. For example, if someone is a Professor, but later they become the Department head, but don't leave their Role as Professor: you cannot just add a New Employment History with its own Start date for the Dept Head Job Title, as that creates an overlapping date with the existing role. Is there a way to reflect this change in Role without using a Compound Job Title, as the date ranges would not be accurate for the two roles

  • @David Webb It's not pretty, but our workaround would be to create a new Job Title record for “Professor/Department Head.” We also do the same in the Department field if necessary. For us this is common for a Professor who is also a Director of one of our centers and institutes, so Department might be “School of Education/Such-and-Such Institute.” And if they return to just being a Professor, another Job Title at the same org can be added then for just “Professor.”

  • @Kelli Crispin Thanks; so you have to use a Compound Job Title. So what you do to have accurate Date ranges for the role is do something like this?:

    Professor, 5/15/2015 - 9/15/2020

    Professor/Department Head, 9/19/2020 - 3/30/2024

    Professor, 3/31-2024 -

  • @David Webb Yes, just like that, so it shows when they held a single title vs when they had multiple titles.
