RE adding the constituency code "General" automatically.

Options

Hello,

I have noticed that sometimes when I process a registration onto someone record from the OLX connector it adds the constituency code general automatically. Anyone know how to stop that?

Ok I did that, but it is adding the constituency code general to people who already have a record with us. I left it blank but the preset default was online donor.

    Just to add more context-

I am working on cleaning up constituent codes and I am saving and closing a lot and I swear I have removed the "General" constituency code on people's record but then it reappears.

@Kassidy Castellanos - OLX will only add the code when a new gift comes through an OLX form. How are you removing the code from records? Through a global change/delete?

No manually going into their record and deleting. Very new to this software haha. Is global change faster?

@Kassidy Castellanos You'll need to create a query for the records with that constituent code before you run a global change. Do you want to delete the code from every record? I would move cautiously so that you don't take it from other records. Maybe look into a query where you only have constituents with more than one constituent code and have the code of “General”.

If you are new to RE, I suggest that you take a class on database administration, global change, import. (i don't know if these are the exact name of the classes, but you have to look).

Global change is a way to do “mass” change to many records. If done improperly you may mess up your database in a way that you do not desire.

If “clean up” is what you are doing, I'm going to assume it is not urgent, do the proper training first.

@Kassidy Castellanos As a newbie to RE, I would also caution as others have about global change or import. As others have said it is too easy to mess up your database.

Could of questions. Are you replacing General if it is the only code on record? Or just removing it if it is an additional code? Are you dealing with thousands of records or a small amount? Approach may be different.

To continue to do manually, I would suggest a constituent query where constituency equals General. Then you can work your way through query results by clicking first row, change and use arrow to move to next record. (You can default your view to open record to Bio 2 tab so another click less.) I did a similar process with a number of records. For larger numbers import or global is certainly worth considering but I would be sure to get training and test several times with a few records.
