exporting name fields ALL CAPS issue

Options

In RE database view, names and spouses are entered in standard capitalization (Herman A. Brown and Sophie N. Brown). When I check a query to see if the correct people are in the group, in the <sort name> field the names on screen are correctly formatted (Brown, Herman A. and Brown, Sophie N.). When I export, <sort name. and <spouse sort> are both in ALL CAPS (BROWN, HERMAN A. and BROWN, SOPHIE N.). I do want to export these sortable fields but in standard capitalization format.

Interestingly, the <name> field in the export is capitalized correctly but it can't be sorted (Herman Brown). Can someone suggest a way to export these fields NOT in ALL CAPS? Thanks in advance.

  • @Audrey Katzman I think that this is a user setting somewhere in your system because when I tried this in my system, the Sort Name is not exporting in all caps. Are you exporting from Export, Query or Mail?

Also - in your Query, you can sort by the Sort Name without using it in your Output. Not sure if that will achieve your objective, but thought it was worth mentioning for those who are reading this who are new to Query.

  • @Audrey Katzman Sort Name in EXPORT is configured to be all caps. if you export in query (which one should really not export in query unless it is a very simple output), the sort name is in proper format. You will have to do an extra step when using EXPORT to change the format in excel for sort name to be proper. There is nothing in User Settings to change this, it is just how it is and will need to be changed once it is in excel.

@Audrey Katzman I just realized that I was using Sort Key and not Sort Name (sample data shown above for the difference between the two). You can also reformat the name listing in your User Options to format it Last Name, First Name.

  • @Christine Robertson thanks, will try that.

  • @Joe Moretti
    thank you for explaining.
