Why is embedded S Tag working in preview but not in actual email?

I embedded an S tag for convio member id at the nd of a URL and it worked in the preview in Convio but when I sent myself a test message - it did not function - any suggestions?

    Hi Jeremy - try sending the message to a Review Group instead of sending a test message. The personalized attributes should show up when you send to a Review Group. Test messages don't do the personalization part.
