Donor paid transaction fees

Options
We would like to offer donors the option to cover their credit card fees for online donations. We currently use Luminate Online and Blackbaud Merchant Services for payment processing. Because Luminate does not offer this option, we’re looking at third parties for help building this and would like to hear any recommendations that others may have.

Thank you!

  • Hi, Sharla!

We'd love to help you with this, and we have a very low cost solution. See our "Fundraising Enhancements for Luminate Online Marketing" sheet here:

  • I'm surprised that this doesn't exist in Luminate. We had a developer write CSS and JavaScript so that we could add a reusable and one data element to donation forms of our choosing to make the attached appear. When donors check the box, they are increasing their gift amount by 3% via the Additional Amount element.

    Good luck!

    Gaby,

Who created the data element for you? Blackbaud, someone on your staff, or a consultant/third party?

    Thanks!

  • Hi Sharla,

I think that the data element where we add 3% (for donors who agree) is universally available in LO -- it's is the Additional Amount element. As is, it just allows donors to add a separate amount of their choosing to their gift. The CSS and JS development was handled by someone at Blackbaud, whom we have on retainer. I believe this solution only works for a single transaction (donation level + additional amount). We had a different solution developed for monthly giving, which increased the selected donation level by 3%.

  • Our implementation is similar to what Gabby had laid out. We used the Additional Amount data element and then I was able to write the CSS and JS to do the 3% calculation based on the selected ask amount. It works for one time and monthly. We also put in place a limit so if a donor entered a higher dollar amount, it wouldn't check by default.
  • We've probably changed our form since I first did it, but the sample code should mostly be the same if you need a starting place for the JS/CSS technique. Check out the thread at

  • Here's another example:

I wonder about these comments saying it works for monthly though. In our experience, the Additional Amount field only adds to the initial payment on a monthly gift, not the subsequent payments.

Also note that this could affect finance, who for us wants this amount categorized differently from the rest of the gift. Technically that portion is a designated gift, that must be accounted that way. We had a few bumps with Omatic getting that to happen.
