Recurring Gift can not be applied to a pledge

Options
We recently launched a capital campaign.  Many of our donors have made pledges that they are filling through our recurring gift program.  I have been told that I can not track this through Raiser's Edge.  Has anyone run into this?  How did you track these donations?

Thank you!

  • Recurring gifts are a different gift type than
pledges. You would need to enter the initial gifts as recurring
gifts and then process payments toward them as Recurring
    gift-pay-cash gifts.

  • I have one or two donors who had prior pledges and payments, and want to make payments via credit card and set it up through our online giving form (to my chagrin and against my advice). What I do is just manually reduce their pledges to what's been paid via the RG (to avoid write-offs). I also enter a Note on the Gift's Misc. tab what I did and why.

A payment can only be made toward a recurring gift or a pledge, but both at the same time.

In theory, you can have the payment redirected to the pledge before you commit it toward the recurring gift.
  • What an exciting time for your organization! I wish you good luck with the campaign!

When my organization did a capital campaign, we already had about 3,000 existing recurring (aka sustainer) donors via Raiser's Edge recurring gifts. We did a study for best practices for a building campaign, and learned that using pledges for this campaign would be best.
    • Pledges can be set up as a one-time payment, annual, monthly, or weekly process.
    • If Mr. John Smith says he will donate $5,000 for the campaign at Christmastime, it's easy to create the pledge in RE to keep a record of the promised money.
    • Raiser's Edge has great pledge-due reports, which can easily be run by the campaign staff to keep track of who has promised money and not yet donated. This enables them to follow-up with donors.
    • This also can help encourage mid-level donors to make larger gifts. "If you donate $5,000 to the campaign over five years, this means you're only paying $83.33 a month for the next five years."
    I hope this helps!
