Comped Membership - How to link to specific appeal or action?

If your organization processes complimentary memberships, what is the best way to link specific mailings or other renewal methods (such as onsite, or web form) to that specific membership join or renewal record? Unfortunately, appeals and actions can not be directly linked to memberships and attributes are not linked to specific membership history, but are fluid and stay on the record even after another renewal. We have a complimentary program that goes to about 700-900 constituents every year.

We only launched RE in Oct/2017 and we are looking for a way to compare the method that complimentary memberships are renewed year-over-year. Currently we list the initial renewal mailing as an action, but actions to the best of my knowledge can't be linked to a membership record. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Are you using the Membership module? We do not have it, so use actions with auto-remind to renew membership funds. We are curious if the Membership module would be easier?
