Assigned Solicitor - clean up

Options
I am trying to clean up old solicitor information.

Is it RE best practice to keep the "former solicitor" in the relationship tab?

If so, can you delete assignments from the solicitor's RE record and not change the relationship tab? Or do you have to change the relationship tab first - to Former and then delete the assignments?

Thank you!

I also wanted to clean up old solicitor info last year - specifically solicitor type table. Figuring that the moment I deleted it someone would ask "Who was the solicitor for ABC when we ran our capital campaign in 2008? so I just did some editing. For us, I determined best practice was to keep it on the relationship tab.

I went to the table and changed by old types to "Archive Info.." Created two archive types - one for capital and one for annual. We use From and To dates so that info is still present. Then using a tip from John H, I changed legend so that all past solicitor relationships appear in a gray.

If you delete the assignment on the solicitor's record it will delete the relationship.

Yes it is best to keep the former solicitor on the relationship tab.  If you delete it you lose relationship history.  When I have inherited and had to clean up solicitors.  I have put an end date (to date) on all of them and started anew, with a new system.  That system being that solicitors are assigned every fiscal year.  Even if they have the same person the following year, it is reentered with the new FY.  This way, you can pull, report on and sort who is doing what with whom when.  It worked much better that way than just having a start date and then end dates that varied greatly from a year to 10 years with no explanation as to whether they were stll the solicitor for that donor.
