Entering Matching Gifts generated by a donor
We have just launched our 1st TR and received a matching contribution from a donor's employer. The donor sponsored a runner and I'm wondering what is the best way to record this transaction -- is it a soft credit to the original donor or do I have the option to create a donation from the company and have it related? This company is not participating as a team or sponsoring the event.
Thanks-

Maybe one of the TR team members can chime in here but I believe the only way you can enter this so it applies to the amount the team or individual raised is by doing an offline donation to this team or the individual (if you received a check). If they sent you a credit card you will have to go in as an end-user and make a donation to the team or individual but create the record as the company.
Hope this helps.

>From the participant's perspective it is important to credit the donation to the fundraising efforts of the participant that solicited the donation that was matched. This type of recognition will motivate your participants to follow up with other donors about matching gifts and showcase companies that match gifts for future donors. From a business perspective your organization needs to develop a best practice of how you want these transactions recorded in both TeamRaiser and your database of record. My suggestion is to record it as an offline gift and recognize the company and donor in the Recognition Name field (i.e. Disney Matching Gift for Mickey Mouse). The company will be the donor on record in your database but both and the company will be recognized on the participant's scroll. I am sure every organization has a different best practice around this topic. It is best to build a standard best practice for your organization and stick to it.Maybe one of the TR team members can chime in here but I believe the only way you can enter this so it applies to the amount the team or individual raised is by doing an offline donation to this team or the individual (if you received a check). If I do not receive the money until later, how do I deal with the matching gift? For example, someone calls and tells me they that their company will do matching gifts. They want me to apply it to their total so they dont' get charged by us for not reaching their fundraising goal. How can I show that it is a matching gift and we have not received the funding yet. Is there a place I can note this and pull some kind of report so later I can go back and take out that note when we actually receive the check? Most companies don't send their $$ right away, some only do 4 times a year in one lump sum. Is there a way to differentiate matching gifts?
Thanks.

I believe the best way to do this would be to add it as an offline gift in the participant's center and then once the gift comes in you can validate it. This will be the only way you can have it show in the progress meter for the amount raised by the participant.

Thanks Kent.
What do you mean by validating the gift? Is it possible to pull a report on not validated gifts?
Thanks!

I'm sorry.... No "validated" but confirmed. Just like you have to confirm offline gifts entered by participants (if you do that).

I understand the bit about recording an offline donation from company and putting both company and donor in the recognition field. However, how do you create a donor for a matching gift company? The donor field requires a person's first and last name. The physical donor of the money is the matching gift company. We will not have any named contacts for the matching gift companies.
Thank youNancy Palo:

Regardless of matching gift or not, how do you record a donation to a TeamRaiser event participant where the donation is made by a company rather than by an individual? There does not appear to be a way to record a donation from a company. Every donation entry seems to require an individual donor's name - which will not always be the case. We cannot record a donation against a person if the gift/donation came from a company: the individual person should not receive a tax-deductible receipt.
Thank you
Tom
