Capturing non charitable gifts in RE from transactions in NC

Options
I'm interested to hear from anyone, but particularly Higher Ed, how in RE you eliminate/hide/redact non-charitble transactions from a donor's giving history if the donor registers for an event/pays for an event using net community.

We are thinking of creating funds with -R as a trailer and then excluding any -R fund from any giving history reporting. It seems logical there could/should be an easier way to process the transaction thru RE and not count in a giving history.

Thanks

  • We use an attribute on the FUND record to indicate if a gift to that fund has any tax deductible amount.  For events with some cost but some receipt value, they would be set to YES but we make sure the receipt value is correct. For any fee that has no deductible amount the attribute is NO and we block it that way in queries/exports/etc.
  • Yes, we’d thought about a fund attribute but
decided against it because all our reporting pulls on gift amount
(total given) versus receipt amount (deduction piece).  It
seemed easier to create a shadow fund and simply exclude that. I
might go back and re think  this option.

I’ve used a variety of products over the years
and wish I was back in FIMS where it was super easy to do gift and
    non-gift amounts!!

    Thanks so much

  • We use two methods:

Funds that are an expense/event registration/non-gift are a separate fund and also have a VSE code equal to Non-Gift - this way when gifts are posted they will fall into the same fund but different account on the accounting side (Banner)

We use only two campaign codes each year:  one for the tax-deductible portion and the other for all non-gifts

Example:  $1,000 but $250 is non-gift is split:
$750 to fund 123A with campaign code of 17NCC

$250 to fund 123T with campaign code of 17MIS

receipt amount would be $750 but both amounts appear on the receipt

When we do gift reporting we only include gifts with the gift campaign codes and/or VSE codes not equal to non-gift

  • So, when you pull a donor giving history, all
the 17MIS codes are excluded from the report?

  • Yes, because I'm only choosing the campaign codes that have tax-deductible gifts.

I have a campaign query I use for the canned reports and the queries within any export summary fields or gifts fields which only uses those campaign codes.
  • Thanks so much.  This aligns with our
    proposed process.
