Best practices for entering donor survey results

Options
Hi!

I was wondering if anyone has any best practices for entering donor survey results into Raisers Edge.

Previously, we've been entering them under Constituent Attributes but we've heard that entering them as Action Attributes is better for pulling results.

Thanks

  • A great question, and one I will follow to see what others post. :)

We'd used Attributes and Notes, but an Action Attribute does seem better because you can log numerous surveys without cluttering the main Constituent Attribute section - each its own Action, but able to load multiple Attributes based on the individual survey questions. Plus you have an Action Notes section already handily attached in the same go-to place. A great idea I think we will implement for our next survey. Honestly, I can't think of any better tracking method. Except of course, any Bio information they provide should be transferred to the main Bio sections, and any important personal history (like, "I used to be a vet but lost my arm in the war") should still be added to the main Constituent Notes so that future solicitors can access the information easily without hunting around.

I record responses as action attributes (and the survey itself as an action). If there is information that we would normally record elsewhere in the record (for intance, an email opt-out or a sign-up for a particular constituent group), I duplicate the entry so that it also appears in the area we typically record that info for consistency.

I have been holding on to a bunch of Graduate surveys wondering what the best way to keep track on them was! So glad to see this!

  • I like action attributes.

We just did a major survey with questions ranging from a score, to multiple choice, to free text answers and I have been struggling with a clean place to save the data.  We plan to do a second similar survey in the future as well.  I already nixed using the constituent attributes as I just cleaned up old messes from there.  I was thinking of using the events module.  The events tab will quickly show on the record that they completed the survey, it has its own attributes, and you can query and report on it quite easily.  I had not thought of the action attributes until I read this post.  I would love to hear someone thoughts before I make my decision.

    Thanks,

    Tiffany

We've been recently talking about this at our organization as well, and using Actions seems like the best idea, you can record answers in the action attributes and you can add action notes and it doesn't clutter up the constituent attributes, it also makes it easy to query those results

I just thought I would give an update on what direction we choose - we went with the events module and so far are really happy with the decision.  We names the event after the survey year and name, are adding the returned constituents to the event and set up the questions and tables in the participant attributes.  We also saved a copy of the survey letter and the survey itself into the media tab of the event and a "key" for the questions and answers since you have limited characters when using attributes anywhere in RE.

Would love to hear how others decisions turned out and any other best practices you may have thought of using!

    Thanks,

    Tiffany
