Returned Check Linked to Membership

Options

How do you handle a returned check if that gift is linked to a membership? I know how to adjust the gift down to $0, but what are suggestions on how to handle the membership part? Thanks in advance!

@Debbie Hanson It's possible to break the link to the membership. I'd then remove the gift from the membership so that it isn't being counted toward a membership.

  • @Dariel Dixon - thank you. I am looking more so for what do you do with the actual membership that was renewed and now needs to be adjusted back because essentially it was not paid for. Would you just delete that membership transaction so it puts the membership back in its previous status?

@Debbie Hanson I think this depends. Do you know if the donor has been notified or if a new check is incoming? I think it's probably good to delete the transaction from the membership to revert to the original status. However, if it will cause a lapse in something like concurrent years giving or in that status and you know another payment is incoming, I can see a case for keeping it and just noting a new payment to replace the original check.

  • @Dariel Dixon - that is helpful and in line with what I had done. Deleted membership transaction and adjusted the gift. Thank you.
