DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:

The Individual Giving Unit Department is made up of four separate departments – Major Gifts, Ambassadors Circle/Annual Fund, Leadership Gifts – domestic and international, and Planned Giving and is responsible for managing relationships with and fundraising from individual donors and family foundations in the U.S., overseas, living and deceased, who support the work of the Center with unrestricted (primarily) and restricted funds. The Department also receives in-kind contributions, which require oversight.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Associate Director position for Individual Giving carries a high level of importance to the financial well-being of the Carter Center’s Health, Peace, and Education Programs through individual donors restricted and unrestricted giving.

  • Requires the ability to carry out effective fundraising efforts, particularly the creation of written materials and managing a portfolio of projects within the Individual Giving Unit.
  • Plays a key role to the financial health of the Carter Center’s programs and involves collaborating with gift officers and others on fundraising efforts, donor management, and system improvements.
  • The position reports to the Sr. Associate Director, Lead, Annual Fund, and may require occasional domestic and international travel, including Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT).

FORMAL JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Implements strategies for identifying, cultivating, and successfully soliciting individuals for gifts between $25K - 100K to support a department, school, or unit.
  • Researches, identifies, and prepares written solicitations to donor prospects.
  • Manages a portfolio of prospects through an active schedule of solicitation, cultivation, and stewardship calls to donors.
  • Builds relationships with current and prospective donors, alumni, and volunteers to support programs and priorities.
  • Writes and edits communication materials directed at donors.
  • Develops strategies for marketing new and existing programs.
  • Maintains information on selected donors and prospects including contact reports in CRM system.
  • Drafts fundraising strategy papers and briefing memoranda for the Director and executive staff in preparation for donor meetings; identifies opportunities for meetings with local, national, and international donors, and assists in the planning of and preparation for those meetings.
  • Responsible for monitoring and managing the donor reporting for the projects within his/her portfolio, which includes coordinating, drafting, and editing reports in collaboration with staff for timely submission to donors.
  • Ensures compliance with all organizational policies and procedures.
  • May ensure the processing of gifts.
  • Travels to meet with donors, as needed.
  • May manage a program/event budget.
  • Supervises interns. Provide mentorship to interns on a rotating basis. May supervise staff.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor's degree and three years of experience in fundraising or related field OR an equivalent combination of experience, education and/or training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Substantial writing proficiency, e.g., proposal writing, narrative reports to donors, fund-raising publications, newsletters, as well as external and internal correspondence, etc.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) are highly desirable.
  • Proven experience in managing and implementing successful fundraising/development operations, including data management, events management, and office administration.
  • A high degree of proficiency in Microsoft Office, SharePoint, and Raiser’s Edge constituent management system.
  • A degree in English, Writing, or a similar liberal arts degree in a related field is desirable.
  • Experience in fundraising and events management for international programs is desirable.

NOTE: This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home regularly but must be able to commute to The Carter Center on a flexible weekly schedule based upon business needs.  Schedule is based on agreed upon guidelines. The Carter Center reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
