Summary/Objective:

The Financial Accountant plays a crucial role in ensuring the financial health and operational efficiency of Phillips Theological Seminary by managing the Accounts Payable process, Business Office Cash Receipts, and General Ledger processes. This includes performing bank reconciliations, preparing journal entries, and supporting both internal and external audits. The Financial Accountant must ensure compliance with accounting principles and internal controls while contributing to the overall strategic goals of the Seminary. With oversight from the Vice President of Finance and Administration, this position is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, facilitating process improvements, and supporting the Seminary's mission of promoting justice, diversity, and interculturality.

Essential Functions:

  • Complete GL Account reconciliation for various cash accounts
  • Research unreconciled items, identifying correcting entries needed and facilitating those corrections
  • Prepare supporting schedules and journal entries for in conjunction with meeting monthly close deadlines
  • Support both internal and external audits
  • Enter and post cash receipt and accounts receivable entries
  • Manage accounts payable and maintain appropriate documentation
  • Prepare and complete weekly cash deposit
  • Complete fixed asset additions and disposals
  • Attend Blackbaud Financial Edge training sessions and other trainings and professional development relevant to position
  • Develop and maintain documentation for relevant business processes
  • Ensure execution of all internal controls and documentation
  • Collaborate with other members of the Business Office to identify and implement opportunities for process improvements, standardization, and automation.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Work Environment:

This position requires an independent and creative self-starter with great attention to detail. The work environment requires self-management and must be conducive to productivity with timely response to Phillips employees and supervisor. This position operates in a professional office environment. This position routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers, copiers and scanners.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit for long periods of time, stand and walk; use hands to handle and feel; and reach with hands and arms. This is an office position requiring minimal lifting or carrying. The ideal candidate must be able to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Position Type/Expected Hours:

This position is full-time and requires 40 hours per week. Some overtime may be required on occasion.

Travel:

Occasional local travel required for support of major events and on-site production. On occasion some out of area travel may be expected for job-related professional development.

Required Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field.
  • One to three years’ experience in Accounts Payable, accounting and general business settings.
  • Familiarity with generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Strong knowledge of computerized accounting software systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft products such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Preferred education/Experience:

  • Advanced knowledge of accounting and/or non-profit accounting.
  • Experience in Higher Education setting preferred
