Do Not Receipt - Receipt Amount

Options

Hello! We realized today that we had to zero out the receipt amount on several gifts that were marked Do Not Receipt to assist with better data reporting for a project. I'm wondering if it's standard practice at other orgs to enter a $0 receipt amount for Do Not Receipt gifts, since currently our database still fills in the receipt amount same as the gift amount (unless there is a benefit on the gift).

@Krista Berg There is not a connection for us between ‘do not receipt’ and a $0 receipt amount.

I'm curious why you would be $0'ing receipt amount for a project. Maybe more info would clarify.

@Krista Berg I have not seen or heard of that as a best practice. There IS still a receipt value to the gift, whether or not you receipt it. As JoAnn says, there is no connection between the two fields.

I would only use $0 as a receipt amount if there was truly no tax deductible portion of the gift, such as a raffle ticket purchase.

  • @Krista Berg I would echo @Karen Diener and @JoAnn Strommen in that what they've said reflects what I've seen with my clients.

That said, are you using the receipt amount as a reporting field in such a way that you need it to be done this what? I don't know that I would recommend that, but I would need more information to speak to it in any case.

There's a distinction in my mind between a $0 receipt amount and a “Do Not Receipt” indicator. We do use $0 receipt amounts for raffle tickets, DAF gifts, etc, where the donor should not receive a tax deduction verification from us. However, some donors simply don't want a receipt - sometimes they feel it wastes paper/postage, or they don't want their spouse/family to see the gift, etc. To me, the “Do Not Receipt” indicator would imply one of those situations where - straightforwardly - no receipt is to be issued.
