Organization records included in an individual-based query

Options

I recently ran a query with one of the criteria being Key Indicator = Individual. The results included a dozen organizations. When I went to each record, they appear to be organizational records -- Org 1 and Org 2 are the first two tabs on the constituent records. Would appreciate any thoughts on what I might be missing and why they could be showing up in the query. Thanks in Advance.

@Michelle Lacey Apparently they pulled in because they met other query criteria. Do you have any ‘or’ statements in your criteria?

One of the best summary statements I've heard on query criteria: If using a combo of “and” and “or” use ( ) and remember that anything outside of the ( ) applies to all.

Has held true in my experience so far. :)

2nd what JoAnn said. Your query criteria likely has AND and OR condition that is not properly “group” together by paranthesis, check that first. If you need more help, screenshot your criteria window and we can help point you to the right direction

  • Thanks @JoAnn Strommen & @Alex Wong. I appreciate your comments. It was the “or" that was tripping me up.

  • @Michelle Lacey you could also consider using an individual query rather than a constituent query, and then you don't even have to worry about the key indicator in your criteria.

  • @Alan French Thanks so much for the tip. I'm still relatively new to queries and that will help tremendously.

@Michelle Lacey @Alan French is a good option. If you are creating the query for use with NetC emails, you have to have a constituent query. Predecessor did lots of ‘individual’ queries (I don't know why) and we struggled a bit when the queries would not work for emailing to figure out why. Wrong type.

  • @JoAnn Strommen ah yes that's a good point, we didn't have NetC so that wasn't something I had to worry about. I think in general you can mix-and-match the constituent, individual and organisation query types within other areas of RE, so an individual query would still work with a constituent export. You can also change one to the other if you go into the query options, so if they've been set up as the wrong type they don't have to be recreated from scratch.

For some things (e.g. globally adding event registrants) you have to use an individual or organisation query, it won't let you use a constituent one, so maybe your predecessor got into the habit of doing them for a reason like that.

@Alan French LOL yes I found out individual needed for event registrations after creating a query. Was glad that switching type from ‘constituent’ to ‘individual’ was an option.
