Query to Pull Constituent and Spouse Separately?

I have been thinking on this and believe I will need to do a merge query. I wanted to see if anyone out here may have another thought, though. Actually, I am wondering if I can fully accomplish this since we will be using RE to send the emails. Would a relationship record even pull into a List?

We want to pull email addresses for our current parents. Typically we only have one constituent for each couple, though, so the spouse is a relationship record. I know I can pull the spouse next to the constituent on the same line. But I do not think this result would allow us to email both the mom and dad, which is what I am wanting to do. I'm guessing I need to build a query to pull one then another query for the other and then merge them.

Can anyone see another, maybe easier solution? Again, since we want to send emails through RE, though, I'm not sure we can send to the spouse record. I appreciate any thoughts on this!

@Miki Martin the only other option I can think of is to combine email contacts for both spouses onto the primary record (as we do). I'm not sure about NXT, but in OLX emails are sent out based on the email type. If I set OLX to send to the “Email 1” email type, then a constituent with two “Email 1” entries will receive an email at both addresses. We typically indicate spouse contacts through the Comments field in Phones, as in the pic below:

As you said, I don't believe RE is set up to send to a non-constituent (spouse) record.

@Miki Martin Like @Faith Murray stated, I don't know if you'll be able to do this in the way you are currently set-up. Since non-constituent records can't have actions, you may want to export them and send them externally if possible. I think you might be able to do a relationship query, but I don't think those queries can be merged with constituent queries.

@Faith Murray thank you for your reply! I did check and we can select the email type or send to primary, which is what we typically do. I hate the idea of entering spouse information on the constituent record, as I have been working to get this corrected to be recorded for the correct spouse. However, I am seeing that if we want to start utilizing the email more for marketing and such I will need to do this.

@Dariel Dixon I did try pulling the information through a relationship query, as working through things today I determined that would be the best way. However, I could not get it to work by finding the moms (typically) of the incoming freshmen. I even tried a constituent query but could not get either to work. I did not want to spend a lot of time on it, as we do have a workaround.

If all else fails, we can just use SwiftK-12 to send the email with a link to our registration form. That is my biggest thing; I want to be able to track who responds through RE and not worry with a Google Form or information from an evite. Thank you both so much for offering your insights!
