Pledges and sponsorship

Hi, we are currently improving the way we work with events and pledges through RE. We haven't used either consistently in the past, only pledges for recurring gifts. I have a hold of recording self-organised events but am interested in recording ‘in aid of’ events where a supporter will be raising funds and has set a target amount. Would you record these as an event with a pledge? or is there an ideal way of recording them as a soft pledge so that they are distinct from minimum sponsorship commitments and reg. fees? My instinct is to use the events module for both types of event and a required attribute on the event to differentiate between the two. I am very open to other ideas or cautionary tales! ?
