Membership Reporting: Last FY compared to This FY (monthly)

Hello,

I'm trying to nail down a good way to report on membership activity monthly comparing this FY to last. The Comparative Membership Statistics report is confusing. I feel like if I could get my head around what query to use I could get this report to work for us.

How are others reporting on this? It seems the canned report (above) counts a membership twice if someone joins/renews and then upgrades to another category.

Expertise and guidance is GREATLY appreciated because I don't think my brain can take any more of this! ?
