Crystal Report Formula for dates (yearly)

I'm trying to pull installment amounts by year and I'm using

if {GfIns_1.GfIns_1_Date} <= 12/31/2020 then 2020

but I keep getting the error message “A date-time is required here” where the date is. What am I doing wrong?

Try this instead:

ToText({GfIns1.GfIns1_Date}, "yyyy")
