Email Personalization in Salutation

Options

Hi everyone,

I've been using the personalization option in the LO wysiwyg (First Name), but at least one constituent has reached out because they have a preferred name that is different from the their legal first name in their record. We have their preferred name listed in Raiser's Edge under “Preferred Name” and it's what shows up as their salutation. In Luminate Constituent360, their preferred name shows up under “Nickname” and salutation.

I would like to use Salutation as the personalization field in the email editor (Nickname is an option, but most people don't have one listed in their record, so it'd end up leaving most with a generic alternative like “friend”). However, Salutation isn't an option. I'm curious if others have run into this and if anyone's found a workaround. I want to make sure all of our constituents can be addressed with their preferred name.

Thanks for your help!

Phoebe

Hi Phoebe, looks like others have had this question in the past as it's documented in the Knowledgebase. You can use the S-tag [[S1:salutation_formal]].

You could create a conditional that would first look for the salutation and if none is found, you could use the first name. That might be the most elegant option.

    Hey Phoebe,

I wrote a blog post covering just this issue a few years ago:

  • If your org uses RELO, it'll send your common names as “nickname” (at least it does for us), but LO doesn't autopopulate that like it does formal name. Solution is to use:

    [[E1:nickname:[[S1:first_name:Friend]]]]

  • Thank you all for your help!
