Spam sign up requests

Options
Has anyone experienced "spam" sign ups on your netcommunity pages? We started receiving sign up requests with suspicious address infomation - city was in US, but address lines were all foreign. Also all the emails end in 163 dot com.

If you did experience this, how do you prevent it from happening? Do I need to open a case with support?

  • While not in netcommunity we do see this in some of our LO survey forms - it varies from none to literally 100+ over a given week.  While we do use captcha on some forms we try to avoid it on others.  We perform a daily automated scan of our RE database looking for data trend outliers (ex. addresses, email domains, etc) - we even noticed that one spammer always used the first name 'James' hence we had an abnormal number of 'James' for a few days which caught our eye.

Once id'ed we generally remove the records.

    Hi Elaine!

Miranda here from NetCommunity support. You'll always get the occasional spam. But if you'd like to take a proactive step, I'd suggest setting up reCAPTCHA on your new user registration (User Login part) to help deter that activity. Check out https://kb.blackbaud.com/articles/Article/47801 for that process. (I also suggest to maximize the setting as this recommends: https://kb.blackbaud.com/articles/Article/192421)  If you you need more help, please contact is us in support.

Anyone else seeing spam sign-up requests recently? Past posts were from fall 2020. I had 350 signup requests this week from:

    94ef2fb499707b6c21163815884033b1-huge-im

First time we've had an issue. No, we don't currently have an reCAPTCHA on this webpage.

    Hi JoAnn!

Miranda here from NetCommunity support. Spammy signups can occasionally occur, but reCAPTCHA can help block the floods of signups coming into The Raiser's Edge NetCommunity plug-in.

I didn't see any reCAPTCHA present on my quick visit to your site today, so please get that set up following these steps: https://kb.blackbaud.com/knowledgebase/articles/Article/47801

It's important to get that added soon. Spammers will sometimes test sites to see if anything is happening by doing a few spammy transactions to see things are monitored. If reCAPTCHA doesn't go up or things aren't caught, then the tidal wave will occur soon.

This is important to get added, so I am starting a support case for us. Please look for a contact regarding this post.
