How do you enter a stock gift?

Options
Do you list individual stocks and the price they sold at?  Or do you input the amount as a whole?

  • We use the High Low Median calculation on the day it is transferred to us as the amount to credit the donor, including that information on the TY letter. We have an order to sell as soon as it is received and when we receive the check we use the Sell feature to on the gift to update it.
  • Jill Holmes‍ the only thing different we do than Michael Langley‍ is we don't sell until we know who the donor is in the event it was transferred to the wrong account and is not our money. If we know - we sell immediately.

When we report on the money for development purposes we only ever report on the gift amount, not the sale amount.

I have attached the form we use when we receive stocks. We have had issues with entering stocks over the years - what date, what is the gift amount, etc. This form has reduced those issues.

As soon as we hear of stock coming in we start a "Blue sheet" They are always printed to blue paper so they stand out. It is pretty self-explanatory.  If anything is not clear I'd love to know as my goal is to make it as clear and concise as possible. We have some redundancies built-in and you may choose to drop some of them. I highlighted things you would absolutely want to change for your organization.

    I hope this helps :)
  • We do the same at Michael Langley. We track high, low, amount of shares and stock symbol as gift attributes which pull into our TY letters.
  • Thank you all this was helpful. I was able to use the high low median calculation.  Elizabeth I would love to see the blue sheet you mentioned, I didn't see it attached.

    Thanks, Jill
  • Elizabeth-

Nevermind I found the attachment thanks!
