Recommendations for Communication Preference for guests and friends asking friends

I am looking for best practices for event guests (non-spouse) and friends asking friends prospects.  We would like to add them to NXT but add a communication preference such as "invites only" (which I don't care for) or maybe just "no contact" until we clear them as opt-in (add a follow up action for post-event opt-in).  This is particularly for strong major gift prospects such as friends of board members.  Thank you.
