Broken relationship links??

Options
I think I may have just stumbled on a huge problem in my "inherited" database. I have noticed many instances where a contact for an organization will be linked back to an individual record in the database. But if I change the contact type, for example, on the relationship record from the organization, that change is not reflected on the relationship record from the individual. Make sense?? Basically, the organization and the individual are linked, but the relationship records are acting independently!  I have no idea how many records this affects in the database, but I fear it's hundreds. Is there any way to identifiy (query, export) the records that this affects?

  • Are you positive that the relationships are in fact reciprocal? It's possible to create a relationship and not have it reflected on the other constituent's record, so I'm wondering if they are actually 2 independently-created relationships that appear to be linked only because they happen to contain the same information, if that makes sense?

If you right-click on the relationship and look at the properties, is there a "reciprocal system record ID" listed or is it blank?

Nothing immediately jumps out at me in Query to identify these broken links, but in Export there is a field "Reciprocate?" which should be true or false depending on whether the relationship is reciprocated on the other record.

  • That's the problem. It appears they are NOT reciprocated, which means that the person(s) who added these contacts must have added it from both the org record AND the ind record?? Wow.This is a mess.
  • Yes, we also have this very huge problem. As far as I can tell, it originated during our initial data migration back when we started using RE in 2011 (In other words, the reciprocal relationships were not created properly from the get go). We have invested many hours into this problem but, at some point during the support process, Blackbaud dropped the ball and we stopped pushing it forward.

So, yeah, we have thousands of "broken" relationships that are supposed to be reciprocal.

Not sure if you got a solution for this or not, if not, you can use field 'This Individual Is A constituent' to query those records.
