Recurring Gifts - change to credit card info

Options
If someone gives you a new credit card (or even just a new expiration date) or changes the amount do you terminate and existing recurring gift and create a new recurring gift with the new info or do you just make any updates to the Recurring Gift setup?

  • You can just change the credit card info. Unless they request to make changes.

I update CC info on the recurring gift record.

I can see no reason to create new recurring gift.  Payments are basically all for the original gift - just a change in payment info.
  • If they give the CC information directly to you, then you can update the recurring gift (I would encourage you to leave a data trail as you do so - either a note or an attribute of some sort).  But, if they go online to make the change, they will end up creating a new gift and you will not be able to move the CC information from one gift to the other.
  • If it is a change in amount, fund, etc., then I would highly recommend an amendment and not a new gift.  That way, you have more functionality with reports and a cleaner giving history.
  • When we were learning to use the RE:EFT module, we were instructed to create a new recurring gift with any updated info and to mark the previous gift as "Completed." This creates a bit of a data trail, whether it's a change in amount, change in credit card info, etc.
  • Using amendments on the gift would be creating a data trail and also using notes would be too. So if a person doing recurring gifts after you can look at those things and see the trail.
  • I update the original gift it is is just a change in payment info, but if it is a change in the overall schedule (more than just skipping a payment) or the amount I create a new gift and close out the old one.

Hi - this question was asked and answered last year, I'm just resurrecting it with a new twist. I have a handful of monthly recurring credit card contributions, and the last time I ran the process, two gifts were declined.  Part of it was expiration dates, but the other part is a donor was issued new credit card with chip, and so his credit card number, authorization code and expiration date changed.  As others responded, I was able to simply go in and update that info on the recurring gift record and when I ran the process, the credit card was charged appropriately.  Just wanted to throw this out there in case others have or will bump into this (credit card number changing because new chip card issued).

But how do you resubmit a recurring gift payment if BBMS declined it for that schedule date?

@Deborah Barrette - If you're running the recurring gift via automatic processing in Web View here's how you can retry a payment:
