Writing to a notepad with rich text formatting

I was wondering if anybody had used the API to write to a notepad with rtf formatting. I don't need very complicated formatting but I would like to put some text in bold and some in italics.

When you look at the text field it shows some kind of markup but as soon as I attempt to add that mark up to a new note it just adds the markup to the note not the formatting.

Any thoughts appreciated.
