Importing New Parents without duplicates

I work for a high school and I wanted to know what the best practice is for: 1. Importing new parents as constituents. How do I avoid duplicates since some of the parents have more than one child attending (ex. a sophomore and a new freshman and in this case I would not need to add them at all)? 2. Changing the constituency from "current parent" to "alumni parent" but only if they do not have an incoming freshman. These may be simple questions but I come from a healthcare background so tracking parents is all new to me. Thanks!
