multiple responses captured in one appeal

Options
We mail an event invitation that people respond to by either purchasing a ticket, or making a donation. All revenue from the invitation is captured under one appeal code, with ticket purchases going to one package and donations going to another within the same appeal. I want to add the number solicited to the appeal tab, and I want to capture both responses (ticket purchase and donation) on the one globally added line in the event tab. Should separate appeals be created for each response? How could I report on cost accurately?

Sounds like you are trying to use packages to code the purpose of the gift (tickets vs. donations).  Instead, use the linking functionality on the gift to link the gift to the event as either a "registration fee" or "other donation."  The appeal should be the same for all gifts regardless of whether it is for tickets or a donation. Then you can pull and report on gifts based on the link type (registration fee or other donation).

Thanks very much Josh. This sounds like the way to go :)

Josh is correct. The way they are designed, appeal and package are to capture what was sent out - not what was received. Best to use the event module for this or if you do not have it, a gift attribute.

Yeah, that's the thing, we don't have the module. So a gift attribute will be best. The downside is the ticket-or-donation status is not immediately apparent to other users...but it's always a trade off. Thank you both again.

I wanted to just clarify a typo I made in my initial post in case this thread is referenced in the future. Where I wrote, "...on the one globally added line in the event tab" I meant to write appeal tab. We don't have the event module, and I want appeal records to work at their full capacity.

Appeal records are supposed to track the effectiveness of what you sent out. They work at their full capacity when that is how they are used. They are not intended to track the response to an appeal where there are multiple response options (like event ticket levels, etc.). I truly wish they had this capacity but they do not. A gift attribute is your best bet if you do not have the event module.
