Constituent query for new and lapsed donors who recently donated

Options

I'm a new Raiser's Edge user, and I want to make sure I'm doing my first query correctly. Any help or feedback is very much appreciated.

Here is what I want to the query to find:

Any donors who have given a gift during the period: 5/13/2013 to present

AND

Who meet one of the two following criteria:

1. Either they are a new donor who has never given a gift previously

2. Or, they are a donor whose previous gift was given on 5/13/2010 or prior

What I did was create a new constituent query, and applied the following filters:

Gift Date greater than or equal to May 13, 2013

AND

(First Gift Date greater than or equal to May 13, 2013

OR Gift Date less than or equal to May 13, 2010)

I feel like something is incorrect, or there are better filters that will help meet my criteria. Any suggestions?

You sure did not pick an easy first query. Unfortunately, you have not sucessfully excluded people who have given between 2010 and 2013.

One of the best tools in constituent query which will help you today is summary information. If you pick from there under gifts the total gift amount you can have it query on a total. So on the criteria tab select equals $0 and then in the filters tab select May 14, 2010 to May 12, 2013 (as well as any other gift type or campaign filters that may apply. You will now get the people you want because they all have to have given nothing in between those dates.

Thank you for your help and quick reply. The summary information filter is quite handy, and I did not realize it was there.

I think that in 90% of my queries involving giving I use the summary information vs. individual gift information.
