How do other RE users identify deceased donors in your upblications? Is there a way to enter a symbol, such as †

in an Addressee type?

We use an asterisk (*) and we click on "Editable" in the Addressee/Salutation table to add it. We have a Type alread of Donor: Honor Roll and we just add the asterisk to that. I always find people I have to update when we run our annual donor list but if you can remeber to update it when the person passes away, it's pretty managable.

We have a separate Addressee/Salutation type called Donor Honor Roll and set up the salutation formulas to include the cross. When we are getting ready to run the donor report reports, I have some queries to check for any set up issues and adjust the salutations as needed.

We use the "cross" or "dagger" (†) symbol for this purpose in our annual report of donors. I find and copy it from the character map on my PC, then use it to build one or more Addressees/Salutations in Config - Addressees / Salutations. Of course, it can be used in editable Addressees/Salutations, too.

Thank you – can you tell me the
font name and size, because when I tried inserting this same symbol
that I found in Word (it’s a MS UI Gothic, size 11), RE changes it
to a straight vertical line; so evidently RE does not like this
symbol. Or can you send me a copy of the symbol that you
use? Do you make an Addressee type for your
deceased?

Thanks, Sara – can you please send
me the cross that you use? The symbol I’m trying to
use in RE in the new Addressee type changes it to a straight
vertical line. I’m assuming there must be a cross symbol that
works well with RE.

† This is the one...You might try to copy this and paste it into the fields section under configuration - Addresses/salutations. Otherwise, you have to figure out the Alt # for the special character code on the character map. (It was already set up before I started using the database.) I tried to find something in the knowledgebase quickly, but didn't have luck. I'm sure it's in there somewhere. Let me know if the cross pasted in doesn't work.

We don't distinguish deceased donors in our Honor Roll. They are listed the same way we list our living donors, as they were living when the gift was made. However, if the estate makes a gift a gift we list it in an estate section. And, the names of those for whom we received a memorial gift are listed in a different section.
