How do I create an A/B Test and Message Variant?

Options

Create Message Variant

Message Variants are necessary to conduct A/B Testing. A message variant contains alterations in the original message to the envelope, stationery, or content of the message. Once you have created a variant you will be able to perform an A/B test to measure audience response to the two messages. For the most accurate results, change one element at a time in a message variant.

Create a Message Variant as follows:

1. Click Create a Variant on the Message Variants page. This is the last page in the message creation flow.

2. Enter a label for the variant. This label is helpful in detailing the changes that this variant will encompass.

3. Click Next.

4. At this point, you should change only one element amongst the envelope, stationery, and body of the message. This process is the same as creating a new message.

Run A/B Test

A/B Testing will allow you to test the effectiveness of your emails, ensuring the best response from your constituents. To run an A/B Test you must create two versions of your Email Message: the original, and a variant (alternative version). For the best, and most accurate results, you should change one element in your variant message. During the configuration of your test you will select subset audience sizes. These audience members will be chosen randomly from your entire audience. After you run the A/B test, you can analyze the results through the Variant Performance Report to determine which message to send to the remainder of your audience.

New for Version 4.0.9: When a message has variants, the Email Campaigns message list Status column now shows the number of variants in each delivery status.

Run an A/B Test as follows:

1. Click Run an A/B Test at the upper left of the Message List page.

2. Select the message that you would like to test. The message must have a variant, and both message variants must be in the approved state before you can run the A/B Test.

Note: New for Version 4.0.9: Approved message variants may be tested even when the original message is not approved.

3. Click the A/B Test link next to the message to test.

Select A/B Test Details

1. Review your test instructions. You will need to configure the A/B Test parameters, as well as set the schedule for when to run the test. The test is scheduled to run immediately if no specific time and date are chosen.

Enter Test Audience Size

1. To set up the size of the audience that should receive each test message, click the Setup button under the A/B Test Setup header.

2. For each message, to set the sample size: (although two fields display, you may use only one field to set the audience size).

As a Sample Percentage, type in the percentage of constituents from your Target List that should receive the message.

As a Sample Number, type in the number of audience members from your Target List that should receive this message.

3. Click Finish.

Change Test Delivery Schedule

1. To schedule a test delivery (other than immediate delivery), click the Edit button under the Schedule header.

2. Select the specific date and time for your test delivery from the drop-down lists.

3. Click Finish.

Note: This scheduled date and time does not take effect until you click the A/B Test button in Step 2 of the A/B Test page.

Start A/B Test

1. When you have completed the configuration of your test, click the A/B Test button on Step 2 of the A/B Test Review page. Your message variants will be sent one after another.

You can analyze the results of your A/B Test through the Variant Performance Report after your sample audience has received your message.

I think that video might have been changed... There are no section numbers (so, can't find section 4.4) and in the Email Message part, the demo does not go into A/B testing - only message setup. Any advice?

    Hi Jen,

The Basics of Email video no longer contains information on A/B testing. However the class Email Stragegy and Optimization does go into A/B testing in detail.

    Hi Jen,

We’ve been revamping our Luminate Online eLearning to make sure it is up to date and relevant for our users, so some content has been changed. As Allison mentioned, our Email Strategy and Optimization instructor-led class does cover the topic you’re looking for, and the price of $300 is reflective of you purchasing just that class, just one time. We also have subscription options which allow all users at your organization to participate in training. The ongoing training can be especially helpful for Luminate Online, you can stay up to date with all of the newest features! The link provided does take you to an old video, which looks like it is still alive, but I’ll warn you – it is very outdated and I wouldn’t trust its longevity.

You might try searching the Knowledgebase or Luminate Online help as well? There are a few resources in both of those locations.

  • Thanks for the clarification. I'll be hard-pressed to justify spending $300 on a one-time training when I just need answers on a few things. Is Blackbaud moving toward this model where all training will be associated with this kind of pricing?

HI Jen, Thanks for the follow-up question. Blackbaud has a spectrum of training and reference tools available. Blackbaud University has a Basics eLearning library to get users started and that is included at no additional cost for all Luminate customers. For more advanced topics, the Blackbaud University materials are either for fee individually or as part of a training subscription. However, there are lots of additional free resources. Our technical documentation is a great resource for the questions that just need one or two pointers. Blackbaud University is meant to provide that hands-on, interactive learning experience and all you may need is a quick search of Knowledge Base or the Community. I hope that helps!

    Hi Jen -

If the help does not answer your questions currently, we'd be happy to seek out those answers and get those topics updated.

Here is the link, but I think you already have it:  https://www.blackbaud.com/files/support/helpfiles/luminate-online/help/luminateonline.html#../Subsystems/Email/Content/Concepts/Admin_Email_Campaigns_Messages_Test_Variants.html

If your questions aren't addressed, will you list them here when you have a chance? We'll work to get them answered and in the documentation.

    Thanks!

    -Colleen
  • I'm in Jen's camp. The video mentioned in passing above (https://convio.adobeconnect.com/_a836067539/messagevariants/) is a great overview -- where can I find more of these -- in general and related to A/B testing -- where I don't have to pay $300 to watch one?

Links to newer training overviews (that are not the Knowledgebase) would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi Sarah,

We have a robust eLearning library in Training Central at the Learn Basics level. Learn Basics is part of your Luminate Online subscription, so all of the eLearning courses at that level are already available for you. Our full list of eLearning courses can be found on the Luminate Datasheet.
  • Hi Allison,

Thanks for responding -- but on that Datasheet, the only training videos that are available free for me (as far as I can tell) are very basic and decidedly not robust for what I'm looking for (in contrast to the earlier video linked to in this thread, which is a robust walk-through), and say nothing of A/B testing (other than to mention that it exists in the "Basics of Email" course).

Any chance the "Learn More" and "Learn Everything" videos are available without a fee for new Luminate users such as myself and my colleagues? Or is there another spot to find videos (even if they're "old" and not officially promoted by Blackbaud anymore) like the earlier walkthrough I mentioned?

    Thanks.

  • Hey Sarah,

What are your questions? Maybe the community can just answer them and you can build your own A/B testing/message variant documentation that you can refer to.

    Thanks,

    Phil
  • I'm looking for a free overview video that explains A/B testing, or at least a link to the 'official' documentation of what you do after you have your test results. For example, the official documentation shows you how to create the test and get the results -- but doesn't walk you through what to do after you find out the 'winner' of the results. It's very rushed, and says, "You can run the variant report and see which had the most click-throughts" -- but nothing clear on how you actually send the 'winner' to the rest of the message. It seems that the Luminate version of variant testing is splitting the message and variant across 100% of the audience, rather than, say, 10%. I'm not clear on that.

(You can understand my frustration on this, since the vast majority of email programs today have a button that you click to 'do an A/B test' and the easily see the winner and click a button that says, "Send the winner to the remainder of the audience." Apologies if I'm missing something clear in the Luminate documentation.)
  • Hi Sarah,

I totally get your frustration. Here is what I came up with as a reference to use:
    1. Variant sample test
      1. Create e-mail and its variant.
      2. On the Messages screen, click A/B test.
      3. In Step 1. Choose the percentage you want to test with. (Usually this is a 10/10/80 test. So 10% to original message and 10% to variant, then 80% to "winner" of the test)
      4. Then do the rest of the setup steps
      5. Once a sufficient amount of time has passed, run the Variance Performance Report to find the message that should be sent to the rest of the audience.
        1. This is only something you will be able to know. You are setting up the parameters for the test and will know who the 'winner' is.
      6. Click, Setup Delivery on the "winning" message and add the audience. (Same Target Audience you used in the variants)
        1. Do audience calculation and you will see in the filters applied area there is a line for 'has been sent this message already'. This filters out the constituents that received the 10/10 send and will match your audience from the initial A/B test.
Let me know if this helps,

    Phil
