Multiple Fund Sub-types

Has anyone dealt with having multiple fund sub-types.  For instance we have approximately 14 different areas that our donors can contribute to that all fall under the same fund/campaign, and we need to be able to track each one individually, but really don't want to set up 14 new funds, especially when they all fall under 1 of our current funds and some of these 14 could only end up with a couple hundred dollars a year. 

We've considered putting each sub-type under gift attributes so we can keep track that way, but has anyone else ever come across this & if so, what did you do?

    If you need/want to link these '14' areas to GL accounts, gift sub-type is definitely your best option.  While you could record info in a gift code, gift attribute, etc., gift sub-type is the only one you can link to a GL if that's important for you.  (Gift sub-types do not need to be linked to a GL but it is an option.  If you're integrated with accounting, you make link on the fund record by entering the sub-type and GL info.)


    From what you described, I wouldn't want to add 14 new funds either.


    Sub-types have worked well for us.

    Assuming your Campaign and Fund Fields already work independently, and it's not an option to use Campaign for the existing Fund and then Fund for your sub-Funds, I would bite the bullet and create 14 different Funds.  That's what I had to do here for a particular report my boss wanted.


    Gift Subtype, as JoAnn suggested, will only work if you will never have a Split Gift between 2 or more of these sub-Funds.  Same with any other Field or Attribute...RE won't know which part of the split to assign it to.


    Our Cpgn & Fund IDs mirror the codes in Finance (we are not integrated/no FE).  So our sub-Funds were similar...if the main Fund is 4440, then that became 4440.0 and the sub-Funds were 4440.1, 4440.2, etc.  Kept it easy for data entry and organized for reporting.


    We also do not start over each FY with a new set of Cpgns or Funds...that would make a difference in the efficiency of whatever system you choose to use.
