Coding Greek Organizations in Education Attribute

Options
When we initially set up our Raiser's Edge tables/conversion data, we set up our Greek Organizations as Education Attributes with the Description as the Greek Organization such as SIgma, Sigma, Sigma, Phi Kappa Sigma, etc.

Recently we had a request to be able to send lists or run queries on only certain types of Greek organizations such as Service, Social, Honor and Education.  In other words, we need to be able to identify each Greek Organization according to whether it is a Service Greek Organization, a Social Greek Organization, etc. We do not see anywhere in RE to be able to identify this within the attribute.

We would like input from other schools to see if you have your Greek Organizations set up this way, and if so, how you have them coded in The Raiser's Edge to identify what "type" (social, service, education, etc.) of Greek organization it is.

Thanks so much!

  • I have used Education Attributes a lot, but on the high school level for teams, clubs and awards.  My instinct/suggestion would be to give you two options.

    1.  If you are not utilized the comments field in the Education Attributes, you could add that extra label there.  That would be the simplest fix.  The downside of using the Comments field is that you cannot control it's consistency of entry in a table.

    2.  The other option would be to re-work the categories OR  the descriptions table to preface it with the additional information so you can query on it.  example: Category = Service Greek Community  Description = Sigma

Category = Greek Community   Description = Service Sigma

Hope this helps a little. :-)
  • Our Greek organizations are grouped as well, and if each org has one category, then I suggest adding this to the table itself.  For our purposes we categorize by function - dental, agriculture, etc.  So category is Greek Organization and description is : "Dental - Delta Sigma Delta"
  • my suggestion would be to change the format up a little on the Descriptions:  Sigma-Service  or Service-Sigma.  Depending on which way you want to be able to short them when you spit them out of RE.
