Matching Gift Challenge and recurring gifts

Options
Just a general question.  If you had a donor give you $25,000 and said "match it dollar for dollar" how do you count recurring gifts against the $25,000?  Do you count the potential or do you count each payment as it comes in?

    Good question.

Does the match have a time period of matching gift for a certain time period or is it limited to cash gifts vs. pledges?

If it has a time period, I'd probably just include cash gifts for that time period.  If match includes pledges, are the pledges due within a year or are they multi-year?  If match is including pledges due within a year or some time frame, I'd consider the recurring gift payments due during the same period.  If donor ends recurring gift payments to me it's the same as a donor cancelling a pledge for this kind of reporting. I don't think it would be real ethical to include recurring gifts for the next 30 years in the amount to use.
  • It's a really short window, one day, dollar for dollar.  Our old system would report a monthly as a whole amount until they cancelled, and then it would show an actual, and now using RE it shows the monthly gift as each payment that comes in, but we could calculate a 12 month period.

    Thanks for the idea.
