I feel your pain.  I've been in same situation of adding without all the info I want/request. 



When I have had to do it I use our constituent attribute that identifies the source of the record and a second look-up attribute that identifies which volunteer, in our case, the name came from with a date.  This has allowed me to query on them so that I can delete them down the road if nothing else is received in info and/or gifts.  I agree it's definitely what I would call best practice.  It does make for a mess when you've entered Mike Smith and a month from now you have a valid reason to enter a record for Mike Smith and you have no way to know if it's the same person. 



We do have people connected as relationships on business records that do not have their own record or any address other than the business.  Maybe that would work for some of yours.
