Creating a Multilingual BBNC Site

Options
Is it possible to create a multilingual site in BBNC, such that when you are on an English page and click a French button, it toggles to a French version of that page?

We currently have a BBNC site available in English and French. However, if you are on an English page and click a French button, it takes you to the French homepage (not to the page you were on previously).

Here is an example of what we want to achieve: http://www.kidneycommunitykitchen.ca/

Any help would be much appreciated.

  • We have a new custom part for NetCommunity that allows you to translate the site into another language - we could extend it to have a toggle between languages without too much issue.

If you have time it might be good to talk this over: support@smartthing.co.uk

  • Hey Iain,

Sounds like you already have this mostly together. The way to do this with what you have currently is put the button on the page level and link it so it goes to the correct French page. Right now it looks like it's on your template and is the same for all pages.

    Thanks!

  • As always Karen is right - this approach would handle the basics for you by having two sites.

To be clear our custom part allows you to translate the built-in BBNC parts as well though i.e. donation, event etc. forms which otherwise you cannot fully do (there is a language tab on some parts but we cover them all) and it also means you only maintain one site not two..

Basically as always choose the best option for you. If you can get away with the two site option then do this as it is simpler and is out of the box NetCommunity. If you do need more then we have a solution and can talk it over with you.
  • Thank you both for your responses.

Karen - If we went with your suggestion, would this mean we would need to build the English page, the French page, then manually add the link to the Francais/English button on both English and French pages?
  • Warren - do your parts work with the hosted BBNC solution?
  • Hello Iain,

Yep! That's exactly what you'd want to do based on what you have now. This is the path of least resistance and won't require you to spend money, just time. Looking at the site you linked it looks like that's basically what they did. The URL for all of the French pages is a bit different, so they are different pages.

Blackbaud can also do this kind of thing for you, but then we're talking about spending money. Please reach out to your Account Executive if you want to pursue that.

    Thanks!

  • Hi Iain,

Potentially the parts do work on hosting but you need to talk via your account representative to get them to do a code review.

I would suggest trying Karen's route if it works for you but if not come back to us and we can talk you through it.

    Cheers
