Cannot soft credit 2 constituents in RE

Options
Hello!,

Hope you're having a good day so far.

We're running RE 7.93 and a gift came in that needs to be soft credited to 2 constituents. They're a father and a son with the same names, Sr. and Jr.

Trouble is, when I go to soft credit them, the Jr. and Sr. do not show up in the soft credit field so it looks like it's the same name listed twice. The Jr. and Sr. are in their respective records in the Titles field.

How do I go about soft crediting them with their titles after their names?

Thanks so much!

Kaveri S.

As long as you select the different records when applying the SC you should be fine.

If you need the name in the box to show the Sr, Jr etc.  you need to pick a naming format that contains those suffixes.  Do you have that on your records?  If so, go to tools, user options.  Under Records (or it could be option under Batch - not sure which one affects display for SC) change the format for the name display to one that includes your suffixes. This will affect how names are displayed elsewhere, too.

Note: When you say, Sr/Jr are on records in title field, that will place them at beginning of name.  Title examples are Mr., Mrs., Ms....

Sr/Jr etc should be entered in Suffix fields.
  • Thank you Joanne so much for your reply! (this is my first run on the RE community. awesome so far!) It makes perfect sense your suggestions but, sadly, they did not work. I do have the Addressee listed for both with the Jr. and Sr., but still they're not showing up in the soft credit field. Weird.

Too bad that the field isn't editable. =;( Anyone have any other suggestions?

Oh, and you're so right, Jr. and Sr. ARE in the Suffix field. My bad.

    Ciao!

Wow, just went and found record with Jr suffix and tried to change name options in for individual in batch to format that includes suffix.  Can't get it to pull.  A middle initial one is an option one spot but probably does not affect SC display.

Only other thought I have would be to pull the Sr/Jr title into their last name field if it's important enough to get it to show in SC box.  Will be there for other things also.

You could chat with support and see if they have any other suggestions. Sorry
  • I believe what you're seeing in the soft credit field is the wonderful Raiser's Edge SYSTEM NAME that you will see in many other places in the system. It just shows you LAST NAME, FIRST NAME - not very helpful!!

But I don't think there is anywhere to adjust it -- I don't think there are any options.

So yes, indeed, if two people have the same last and first names but have different suffixes - makes it look like a mistake....
    • Recently, I  found two records that looked like dupes -  same first and last name and no suffixes and they were both linked to the same organization. Turns out they were a father and son with the same names, one Jr and one Sr and they both worked at the same organization!!
  • Joanne & Gina, We're so in tune! I went in and did just that...I added the Jr. and Sr. in the Last Name field. RE is too smart for its britches. It would not show the Jr. and Sr. in the s/c fields with the suffixes!! Darn!

    Yes, time to call Support!

Thanks y'all. So good that you have my back in my time of need. ;)

Did you remember to save the record after you put the suffix in with last name?  I put it in without a comma and it pulls Smith Jr, Bill.  If I put a comma (Smith, Jr) SC field pulls Jr, Bill.

Really wierd as it actually pulls with middle inital for the Jr name but not for the Sr name.  I have two records Jim V. Smith and James V. Smith that are a Sr and Jr.

Also, it you put in last name field you may need to select him as SC again - doesn't always pull the change automaticallly.
  • Joann -  I forgot that you do have some options in Options/Records/Individuals/Constituent name format but the choices are only:

    Last name, First name

    First name, Last name

    Constituent ID

Still doesn't give you anything that will help with the suffix situation ...

I would just be cautious about 'messing' with the last name as this might give you problems elsewhere (when creating a letter, for example) --  it's going to give you as a salutation:  Dear Mr. Smith Jr.
  • Yes, remembered to save it (like 5 times!), then tried without comma, Still the Jr. & Sr. don't show in soft credit. Arg!
  • Yes, I would be afraid to change the name format as well. Scary thought what it might do to other records. crying
  • Ok, so case is solved. RE researched and the best/only way to add the suffixes without changing user settings is to enter the Jr & Sr with no spaces, commas or period, like this: John JonesSr

It's not elegant but it'll do for now to distinguish the two. Thanks all for chiming in. This is a cool forum!

    blessings,

    Kaveri
