Membership reporting - renewal rate

I am trying to create membership reports for my Chief Advancement Officer. He basically wants to know what the renewal rate is month to month. Right now I am using a combination of queries and a report to give him renewals, lapsed and new members month to month but now I need to take it a step further and give him renewal rates for membership categories. There doesn't seem to be a report that does this so I was wondering if people have suggestions on setting up queries.

Which reports are you using, and when you say "renewal rate" do you really mean retention rate?

I use the Membership Reports-renewal Report, New Members Report and Rejoin report and filter on the different categories to get my totals per month. I also run the dropped members report by Month and filter on the different categories to see what the retention rate is per category. I have an excel worksheet that I update from the reports and then we can see at a glance how any one category is (or is not) doing. It is attached.

How would you want to count upgrades/downgrades? Which category would they fall into, their old category or the new category or something else? These sorts of reports become so complex when you factor in all of the various elements, and everyone tends to want to look at them differently.
