What is the proper way to list spouses who do not share last names in the alphabetical list of Honor Roll of Donors for publication?  Example:  Mr. John Doe & Dr. Julie Alvarez.  Do you put John under the D's and Julie under the A's?  Thanks for your help.

    If they are donors of one gift, they have one listing for us.  It would be under "D" and listed as John Doe & Julie Alvarez.  If they both made separate gifts, then we would list each name separately. 



    To deciding if the names are under "D" or "A", we'd look at original prospect assignment or any knowledge we have documenting who was contacted / made pledge / made payment, etc.

    Main reason we'd list as one listing would be for consistency.  If my husband and I give a gift that is from both of us but have the same last name are we listed separately?  You have to do what works for your org/pleases your donors but most I'm guessing would expect one listing for one gift. 



    I've actually had two cases where both spouses annually make separate gifts but after they were listed separately one year, they requested to be listed together as one listing.

    We always list the donor first, then the spouse. So it can vary, if Julie donated, then it is under A, if John donated, then it is under D. We made the rule that the actual donor (who gave the money) gets primary credit.

    When dealing with both spouses added to RE, then we assign one as HOH and they receive the hard credit for all gifts and we always soft credit the spouse if they have their own record.  In your example, their names would then be under the D's in hour honor roll of donors list in our annual report all as one name only.

    We have always listed the gift once with both spouses, listed by the last name of the HoH.  We also have clear rules about how/how an HoH becomes HoH.

    all listings are formatted old school, Emily Post -- female and then male.  Whatever you choose be consistent!

    We also use the woman's name first and the man's name last.  We put them as one listing, and whoever is the primary record is where they fall alphabetically, 99% of the time.  We, very rarely occasionally, will move someone around, but then we go and adjust the record so it will pull naturally in that space where we want it to next year.



    We've had one instance of spouses who wanted to be listed separately.  They both were major donors and very connected to us before they were married, so they wanted to continue to be recognized separately.
