using upsells to manage multiple / family registrations?

Has anyone used upsells to manage multiple / family registrations in TeamRaiser? Or perhaps eCommerce? Currently we enable the multiple registration option, but this has its problems. Most significantly, we made the decision not to enforce unique emails so that a parent who wants to register her 10-year old child to participate in our 5K walk/run doesn't have to enter a new, unique email address for each child, but can just enter her own.



Problem is that every year we end up with participants creating multiple constituent records that have the same email address in Cons360, so they receive multiple copies of every coaching email or fundraising appeal. And it just dirties our data in general.



Has anyone found a good way around this using upsells or ecommerce? If so, how do you still track the names of those additional registrants and information like t-shirt size, for example, for purposes of race check-in? Appreciate your help.

  • We are in the same exact situation, and we've pretty much ignored the issue. But this post got me thinking about it again.



    I think what we are going to do is to create a rebuildable Do-No-Send group consisting of all the 'child' participant types. You could also add everyone under a certain age if your DOB data is good.



    This way the family registrations can still get coaching and autoresponders, and fundraise, but won't get all the solicitations and other broadcast email. Your reporting will be much easier than taking them out of TR and into another module, too.

    That's a good thought, Brian, to deal with the email spamming issue. Unfortunately, it doesn't solve the other difficulty related to the standard multiple registration feature, which is the proliferation of duplicate constituent records. We try to be aggressive about duplicate clean-up and often run into a case where a person's registration is deleted when the parent and child constituent records are merged inadvertently because they have the same email address. Any thoughts? 

  • Dups are a giant pain in the butt, I agree. We don't see too many parents merged with children, though. I would say that's just process. Requiring fields like Title and DOB helps.



    You should also get a pretty clear warning when merging records that have TR registrations associated.
