Certification prep?

Hi... I'm responsible for Blackbaud University (having joined the company 6 months ago). Each of you have brought up valid points/questions and I wanted to provide you some background on what we are doing and preview where we are headed.
For the last few months, our team has been focused on building from the ground up brand new curriculum for RE. In the last 90 days we have launched 40+ new courses for RE which replaced all of our previous Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT) and Regional RE Training. We have also launched a set of Best Practices and Outcome base curriculum as well.
We also introduced the requirement for a set of pre-requisites for our advanced courses. In addition, the Fundamental training series replaced Essentials. We wanted to have a easy way to allow experienced Blackbaud RE users to bypass the pre-requisites - so we created the Fundamentals exam. This exam is not equivalent to the Associate exam as the Associate exam covers additional materials. The request to have documented on the web the Associates exam is valid and something that we will fix.
We put a hold on the professional and masters exams as we realigned the entire curriculum and we needed time to redo some of the questions in the question bank. We will be relaunching these later in the year.
We are currently in the transition window between the old courses/exams and the new courses/exam...my apologies if that has caused confusion. We are heavily investing in RE courses and we will further invest in the Certification program. More to come... but know that we are hard at work. Our plan is to launch 2 brand new RE courses a month moving forward once we finish the rebuild process.
Happy to answer any additional questions/concerns that you might have.To add to Terry's note above, I'd like to clarify a few of the questions that I've seen in this chain. First of all, I like the idea of noting that the Associate level exists and users who achieved that level are still Blackbaud Certified. We will work on figuring out the best way to represent this on our webpage BlackbaudCertification.com. I also apologize for the confusion and I want to make sure that everyone who has demonstrated their strong knowledge of Raiser's Edge is appropriately recognized for it.
I also want to clarify what is covered on the Fundamentals exam. Optional modules are not included on the Fundamentals exam. I know that there were a few questions on the Associate exam but since optional modules aren't covered in the Fundamentals Series, they are also not included on the exam. The best way to get an understanding of what is included on the Fundamentals exam would be to review our prep guide. You can download that from this page.
Users who do not pass the first attempt are able to take it again at no additional charge. Users are also able to have Raiser's Edge open and reference it when answering questions. They can also have other help resources open like User Guides, KnowledgeBase, etc. but I'd caution that anyone who relies to heavily on these help resources will most likely run out of time and not be able to answer all of the questions.
I'm also happy to answer any questions that anyone has about the program. We are working hard to make the Professional available again as well as publishing the Master exam.Hi - I was planning on taking the Associates exam and never had time to poke around in the sample database to prepare for it - and now it's gone? I'm curious about the rationale behind taking that away - I'm guessing that it was "too hard" for an initial test level and therefore the Fundamentals was created. I hope that the "step" to Professional level isn't too steep for users - is there any plan to bring an intermediate level back?
I, too, am taking it more for personal accomplishment than anything else - there really aren't any career benefits to it in our community. I have already volunteered my knowledge to the local user's group, teaching a session on Batch entry. I hope my experience will be enough to get me through the Fundamentals, but when you take out the Optional Modules we don't have, I think I'll be OK!

I took the Associates Exam in early Feb (and passed, yay!). But now I'm not sure what to tell others on our team who are thinking about taking the new Fundamentals exam. Someone mentioned that the optional modules are not tested in the new exam. Are there other "headline" differences I should mention? They all know how I prepped, so I don't want to steer anyone wrong based on my experience with the old exam.

You are correct Josh. I was digging around a few weeks ago when someone from my local user group asked about certification prep and noticed the same thing. The question I was asked was about the optional modules, which I've been told aren't included in the Fundementals test. That's a new test that doesn't directly replace the Associate level test some of us took. I know the Ed Services team has been working hard rebuilding all the training courses. I was told that if those of us who took the Associate level test still wanted to take the Professional level that it's still an option. I'm sure they'll make an annoucement when they've got more of the courses and tests re-worked a bit. It should make it a lot easier to know what to study up on.0 -
Amy, I took and passed the Associates exam in early 2015. I just missed passing it the first time but did a lot better the second time without a lot more studying. It really helped to just be familiar with the exam the second time around. The best prep I found was to slow down a bit in my day-to-day work and read EVERYTHING on every screen that I normally zip by and to really look at parts of RE I don't normally spend much time in (like business rules). Then, when I took the exam, I had two computers set up side by side -- one that I took the exam on and one that I had our database open in and could quickly and easily look for things in. It's not possible to know all the answers (at least not for me), so I focused my prep on familiarization and navigation -- in other words, knowing where to find the answers and find them fast.
By the way, I found the prep to be a lot of fun -- a great license to explore!

Amy, I have roughly the same years of experience using RE and many of the optional modules. I took the Associates before it became Fundamentals. It took me two times to pass. The first time, I did not have access to the sample database which I think was the difference. Before taking the second time, I restudied the prep guide and made sure I had access to concurrent use of the sample database. It was key to success. No matter how much you think you know about RE, they do not make it easy. Make sure you are well read, studied, prepared and take advantage of the open book (live or sample database). Goof luck!0

Santa Fe, NMHey Gracie,
I'd love to share our rationale behind changing the bCRE program. As others have noted in the thread, we've worked very hard to completely overhaul all of our Raiser's Edge curriculum (and eventually all products!) over the past few months. In order to better align the exam with the progression of the curriculum, we changed the series of exams. We wanted the Fundamentals exam to cover the functionality covered in the Fundamentals class series. Additionally, that will mean that a reorganization of the Professional and Master exams were needed as well to not only reflect the next steps in the curriculum but to also even out the steps between the exams. I hope that helps and please let me know if there is anything else I can help answer for you about the exams or the bCRE program!0 -

I wanted to assure you and others who have passed the Associate exam that they will be eligible to take the Professional exam once it is released without needing to first take the Fundamentals exam. We will also be publishing a new prep guide for the PProfessional and Master exams once we've finalized what functionality and topics will be covered on each. We're working very hard to get those back out as soon as we can but we're also working hard on completing our overhaul of our RE curriculum and creating new classes to get ready for the general release of RE NXT! We'll post an announcement when the new exams are ready again! Thank you for your continued interest in the bCRE program!0 -
I'm getting ready to take the Fundamentals Exam and am really curious how much I'll need to study. I started working at this company almost a year ago so all of the training that I took was at least 10 months ago. I'm wondering if I should just "wing it" the first time and if I pass, great, and if I don't then at least I'll know what I'm in for. Thoughts?
Thanks!0 -
Just wondering, did you read all the posts in this thread? I was going to send you link to it but see it's the same one you posted on. There are some posts that directly speak to taking it first / second time and about content. I had found their posts helpful.

I did read the thread. I think I'm just going to sign up for it and take it and then at least I'll know what I need to study when I don't pass the first time.

I just used the prep guide. That was all. The nerves I had built up were worse than the test itself. Relax! You can always take it again if you dont pass.0
-
I prepped with: User Guides, Certification Prep Guide, free videos on Training Central.
Keys to passing the test: Use the first time (if you don't pass) as an introduction to the test - how questions are phrased, topics covered, etc. You will not have the same questions on the next test. Keep your Raiser's Edge open during the test so that you can refer back before answering the question. I also kept the user guides open during the test so I could quickly research something if I had time at the end. Bookmark any questions you are unsure about so you can go back and spend time in either RE or User Guide for assistance in answering the question. Good luck!

Hey Danielle,
Thanks for the question. Like the Fundamentals exam, the Professional exam will be aligned to the functionality covered in a set of classes. We want to make sure that for users who have not been using Raiser's Edge as extensively or for as long as others, we have a learning path for them to be able to learn the information necessary for using the product correctly and also passing the exams. There will still be no requirement to take classes before registering for the Professional exam the first time. The only requirement that still exists is that a user has passed either the Associate exam or the Fundamentals exam. We will be announcing the changed we are making to the bCRE program as well as launching Blackbaud Certification programs for a few additional products as well. We will also be updating the website for those that aren't able to make it to the conference so they have all the inforamtion they need.
I hope that helps.

I'm glad to hear that no coursework is "required" to pass the Professional level - becasue there's no way we could pay for any of the courses from Blackbaud, and I can't afford to pay for them myself. The maintenance fees are very high for a small tribal college like IAIA, and anything above and beyond is a luxury. I'm thrilled and surprised that I get to go to bbcon this year; thank goodness for a thoroughly professional boss who knows how to support his staff!
One thing that I think would improve the certification process would be some kind of feedback on the test results. I realize you'd have to have vast numbers of questions to choose from in order to actually return the questions to the test-takers, but it would have been useful to have a list of topics that I should review based on which questions I missed. I was surprised taht I had as many wrong as I did - there were only one or two where I was struggling with the semantics (the topics were pretty straightforward, it was the phrasing that was designed to trip up the test takers) but I thought I had figured out all the others about which I was a little unsure. If I had received a list of suggested review topics based on my results, I could have checked back over weak areas. As it stands, I think the trick wording was my main downfall, so I'm not too bent out of shape.
See you all in Austin!0 -

See you all in Austin!Hey Gracie,
WHile we'd love to share feedback on what areas of the software a person should study based on which questions were marked incorrect, Training Central (our learning management system that administers the exams) is not sophistocated enough to allow us to deliver this information to each customer taking an exam in an automated way. Unfortunately, until this feature exists there is nothing we can do other than what we're doing now which is giving basic guidance for which general topic (Constituents, Gifts, Query, etc.) where a question is missed.
As for "tricky wording", we're happy to address any concerns you have of specific questions. Our intention is not to be tricky and we've carefully reviewed and revised questions to make them as simple and straightforward as possible. However, question writing is a difficult and delicate skill which we're always trying to get better at. If you can remember any of the questions that you felt were tricky or had deceiving language, please send those to Certification@Blackbaud.com and we'll be happy to take a look at them and see if we can rewrite the question in different way.
Please feel free to stop by the Training area at bbcon and introduce yourself. We'd like to meet you and have a conversation about the Blackbaud Certification programs.

LOL - I, too, have put it off. Figured I'd stuggle with questions on the optional modules we don't have. I should also just put it on my schedule, bite the bullet and attempt. Would just be for my own vanity to be certified as not really looking at any career moves.
Yes, I had heard you got a re-take with no fee.I'll admit it, I mostly just want to be one of the cool kids at bbcon. So, bbcon is happening now. Are you one of the cool kids?

I'm not sure if this holds true for the Fundamentals exam, but the Associate bCRE exam focused heavily on knowing every way to do something, not just the best/preferred way.0

Hi Zane,
We have worked to improve the exam to make it more focused on the best way to do things and less on knowing all the ways of doing something.
As for preparation for the certification exams, the Fundamentals and Professional exams will not cover optional modules.
I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have further questions.0 -

I know this is an old thread, and the OP got certified (Congrats!), and to cap it off, I've never taken the test. Still, I had a thought that applies just as well to this as it does to many other things:
If you want to learn a subject, teach it. Even if you're an expert, doing and teaching are totally different things. In order to communicate knowledge to a person, we must think about it in ways we don't usually think otherwise. In so doing, we come to see our own knowledge in a new light.
Sometimes we think we aren't knowledgeable enough to teach a subject; the undertaking seems to come with the unspoken implication, "I am an expert. Please listen to me on principle"--and who wants to hold still for that arrow?
Really, though, there is a lot we can all offer. If you are even thinking of sitting for the BCRe, you're advanced enough to help someone who just got their first job working with RE:. Though it doesn't happen all too often, when I see a question here and have something to add to the discussion, I chime in. Sometimes I have to fact-check, because I don't want to lead anyone wrong, and that's where the growth is.
You may find that you know considerably more than you would have given yourself credit for.

Congrats on your certification! As we enter 2016, with the new professional certification arriving hopefully soon, never forget how powerful working as a team can be. Our team created a study guide focusing on our individual weaknesses within RE.0

I agree wholheartedly with Daniel and Brinkley! I Teach and Teamwork! have been using RE for approx. 20 years, and became bCRE last year. I have two colleagues who started a year ago with no RE experience. After a year of teaching and mentoring them, they both passed their Fundamentals exam this week! In the process of teaching them, I learned more. As Daniel said "In order to communicate knowledge to a person, we must think about it in ways we don't usually think otherwise. In so doing, we come to see our own knowledge in a new light." Bring on bCRE-Pro!!
Wishing everyone a Healthy, prosperous and successful 2016!!1 -
Question for others. I took the Professional certification exam and did not pass. I felt that some of the questions were a bit confusing. I have worked in RE for 10 yrs and felt confident but I don't know. I even took the bootcamp class prior still no luck. Any recommendations before taking again??0

I have worked in RE for 10 yrs and felt confident but I don't know. I even took the bootcamp class prior still no luck. Any recommendations before taking again??If you failed by a few questions, I wouldn't worry about it. The professional certification often brings up modules that you may not use often, or at all. If you failed by a significant set of questions, I would definitely consider looking over some of the materials again. Sometimes the questions are written in a confusing way, but I would focus on the modules you know best. And take your time through the test. Don't rush through it.
