Best Practices for recording Estate Gifts

Options

We have received and will be receiving gift(s) from an Estate.  We currently have a record in the database for this donor (it is marked as deceased).  Is it best practice to still add gifts to this record or set-up an organization for "The Estate of..." and link her record and soft-credit her record for these gifts.  My thought is to set-up a different account so that the executor still receives mailings/receipts/newsletters?  What are your thoughts on this????

This is one of those things where it is up to you, really. There is no one best practice.

Technically the estate gift is most likely legally from the donor so putting it onto the donor's record makes sense. Knowing that RE then excludes that record from mailings, etc and that a deceased record can't have a "contact person" like an organization record for an estate can have makes putting it onto a new estate record makes sense.

My personal preference, separate estate org record.

If gifts are from an estate, we set up a record for the estate.  While it's another record, it's cleaner, more accurate record keeping to us.  With individual marked deceased, a separate record is the easiest way to include executor/family in mailings and other communication.

From previous forum posts, sounds like RE users do both. :)  Here's link to post on same topic: http://forums.blackbaud.com/forums/p/22107/443599.aspx#443599
