Constituent Management and SSO APIs
We are in the process of bringing a "the Port" site online and integrating it with convio and some non-convio pages.
I am wondering if it is possible to use the Constituent Management and SSO API from our non-convio (and non-port server) pages to manage the login process.
We will have several different "look and feel"s within our Port implementation and we want provide the user with the correct context when he or she is logging in or registering. We can do this to some degree within Convio using surveys (or copied forms) but error handling remains somewhat problematic (reverting to a page with the generic Sierra Club look and feel which we do not want).

Adrian, I think I need to know more about what you want to do. I think you are saying you want to use a third site that acts as login/logout/registration for each community, and you want to use the Constituent APIs to make sure the registration data captured is transferred to Convio and ThePort as well as returned to the page when revisited, and you want to use the existing SSO API to essentially authenticate the constituent and then redirect them to the community. Is this correct?

Yes. So I know for instance I can essentially copy the survey form onto a third party site and that works (I can register and login with my version of the form).
The trouble with that is dealing with errors, and it seem like using the SSO api would be the best way to go.
It seems as though it might be possible, but the mention of Convio can't be the "master authenticator" is what is tripping me up in the documentation.

Not sure if you've seen this thread. http://community.customer.convio.com/thread/1692. I think Jeff spells it out in there how the SSO API, as it stands today, works and how it will be enhanced in August.

Adrian, when you say "the Port" do you actually mean ThePort Networks? Convio has a custom API built specifically with that company to allow Convio to serve as the master authenticator in that SSO relationship. My hunch is that much of the work that's gone into the updated public SSO API that's been mentioned else in Open recently came out of this private API work (or visa versa...).
Anyway, CARE has a relationship with ThePort and provides a social networking environment we call CARE Connections: . It's been public only a little over 2 months now, so it's still small (though growing much more rapidly than we anticpated).
We're still on the GetActive platform, so the SSO is a little kludgey since there is no such beast as an SSO API in GetActive -- I had to sort of create one myself as a hack using a combination of JavaScript, GetActive's login form and their XML Member data API. Still, it's works more or less and what doesn't should be fixed in a couple months when we complete our migration.

Yes, thePort Networks is what we are setting up. We don't want to use the default SSO we get because our branding on our social network is going to be different from our regular website (and a further complication in that we have distinct communities within the social network). Anyway, for the time being, I have a kludgey solution that will work. But I think I can do away with in short order once the SSO API changes in August.

It provides a good description of a fairly simple SSO configuration that we've been doing with a number of clients.
