Donation API: How is proxy_id used?

Options

We are curious as to how the proxy id is used? The documentation doesn't provide very much detail. I'm assuming that for the donation API the proxy_id field would be another constituent ID? How does that affect the donation? i.e. who is getting credit for the donation if the the donation has a marked proxy id?

What we are really wondering is if it is possible that Constituent A is filling out a donation form, and they want Constituent B to be credited with making the donation. Is this possible?

  • The only usage of proxy_id that I'm familiar with is in conjuction with our TeamRaiser product. TeamRaiser enables constituent led fundraising, such as an event (run, walk, bike, etc.) in which participants register then undertake to solicit gifts from their contacts (the donors). In such a donation, the donor's constituent record is strongly associated with the donation and the constituent ID of the participant who solicited the gift is recorded with the proxy_id.

Thanks Jeff. That clears things up for us.
