Hidden Interest Updates
Our interests are set up to create the opt-in, opt-out groups that ultimately power our email campaigns. We want to use hidden interests to say that when someone fills out a survey, donation form, etc., they should automatically receive email campaigns X, Y and Z. Will those hidden interests overturn anyone that has previously opted out of a certain campaign?
If someone donates (hidden interests opt them into X, Y, Z), unsubscribes from X, donates again (hidden interests trigger again), will they start receiving X again?
Thanks!

If someone donates (hidden interests opt them into X, Y, Z), unsubscribes from X, donates again (hidden interests trigger again), will they start receiving X again? We do something different, we have several default interests -- lists that a person gets subscribed to when they register. In that case, it is definitely true they do not start receiving X again because they are not re-registering. But with hidden interests, I'm fairly certain they would be re-subscribed. Otherwise it would be hard to let someone re-up for an email interest.
But this should be pretty easy to test?

Thanks for the info - we will test this idea out.
I've got a followup question for you regarding default interests -
Default interests really intrigue me. I was originally trying to figure out the logic of turning on default interests, but it got a little difficult. The problem: We let our program staff use Convio to reach out to their contacts - and they have problems with my team (in development) using those contacts for general communication/solicitations/etc if the contacts didn't opt-in some other way. It's my understanding that even if we're importing those program contacts, they are subscribed to default interests, correct? The first consideration was to throw them into a group that could go into the do-not-mail list of the email campaigns associated with our default interests when we imported these names. However, what would happen if the program contact later took an action on our website to enable them to receive general communication/solicitations/etc? Since do-not-mail groups trump the target lists, the program contacts would still not receive my communications.
Is there an easy way to manage default interests if not everyone in Convio should be receiving them, but they are still eligible to receive them if they take certain actions???
Thank you.

Hey David,
I don't think there is an easy way to manage them. There are trade-offs no matter how you do it. Personally, I dislike the idea of signing up people for multiple things no matter how you do it -- just makes it more difficult for the user to know what is going on. I can understand why orgs (including my own) do it, but it does create problems with how to handle certain situations (as you outline in your original email and this latest one).

"It's my understanding that even if we're importing those program contacts, they are subscribed to default interests, correct?"
Correct.
"The first consideration was to throw them into a group that could go into the do-not-mail list of the email campaigns associated with our default interests when we imported these names. You should do a Segmentation Upload for those imports that are not do be contacted yet, not just add them to a do-not-email group. With the segmentation upload you can set them as OPT_IN=FALSE. They are then removed from the interest opt-in group and added to the interest opt-out group. This should allow them to opt-in again in the future and not be trumphed by membership is a do-not-mail group that the cons can't control themselves.Regards, Brian

How do you have hidden interests set up for donation forms? We would like everyone who donates to our Oil Spill Recovery Efforts to be added to our "Oil Spill Updates" e-mail interest. I know how to do it by adding a "Hidden Interest Update" question to an advocacy campaign, but not to a fundraising campaign. According to the support team, it's not possible.
Thanks in advance for your help!

You can, however, add an "Email Interests" question to a donation form, mark the Interests you want to be recorded for donors to that form as being "Checked By Default", and then use CSS in an HTML Caption question to hide the Interest checkboxes. That'll look something like this (where "donor-email-interests.32620" is the id of the tbody tag around the Email Interests ... you'd have to view source on the form to see the id):
<style type="text/css">
