Doing a global change using an excel or CSV file

Options

Hello,

I was given a list from our marketing department of constituents who need to be removed from the university magazine mailing list. My hope was to add the solicit code “No Magazine” on to their records. Is it possible to add this in a global change using the CSV file shared with me? When I go to do a global change it seems like I can only do one based on a query.

Any other suggestions?

Global changes can only be done through internal means. That said, you should look into importing this data. That is how you would need to add the solicit code.

  • If you can't import this file (for example if it only contains email addresses and not ID numbers) then you could copy and paste those email addresses into a constituent query and then use that to do your global change. I do this all the time with global adds because sometimes it's just easier to fill out the fields there than to do it in Excel, having to make sure I've included all the right fields, got the right code table values, then map the columns to RE etc.

To piggyback on @Dariel Dixon and @Alan French, you can do a global change if you have the ID #.

After my first experience with this, I have mail house and/or marketing department include the ID in the data used so it's part of what I receive back for situations like yours. Then I can paste the IDs into a query and do my global change.

  • Hi Joseph,

Here is a basic sample of an import for new constituents adding solicit code. I always include as many fields as my data has or add fields I know I need for my new records (gender, title, etc). Hope this helps.

Lots of great suggestions from folks here - if it's smallish, I would just use the emails to build a query, but if it's a huge list, I would likely do this via an Import. I don't love RE's internal import functions so I use the free version from Importacular and it works great for this sort of thing… especially if it's something you will have to do again someday because then you will have the process saved and ready to go.
