CAPTCHA and Accessibility

Options

I really hate to bring this up but the CAPTCHA that is set up on my site is not entirely accessible, especially for the deaf-blind people who want to particpate in the housefile contest, make donations or online membership drive.  Most of these deaf-blind people cannot hear the voice message or read the CAPTCHA message on the eCard.  Do you have an alternative for this issue?   One suggestion is to have the sytem teams to check the W3C page at: http://www.w3.org/TR/turingtest/.  One can google CAPTCHA and accessibility to find good resources to deal with this issue.  Many thanks for your help.

  • Hi Randy,

    Sounds like our engineering team definitely needs to revisit the accessbility of the current CAPTCHA.  In the meanwhile, it's possible to turn it off globally across your site.  That can, in some cases, lead to more bogus email addresses on your Cons360 online marketing database, but it's probably better to manage that problem than to discourage your key supporters with a barrier to their participation with AADB.

    If you'd like, we can go ahead and turn it off - just post back to let us know.

    Thanks Patrick.  I would like to shut the CAPTCHA feature off until we can resolve this issue.  I'm sure someone will come up with a good, not perfect, solution.  While shutting this feature off, do you have some advice how I (or anyone who are interest) can do to check for false email addresses?  Again thank you for your time.

    Randy -- I agree that the best way to avoid this is to turn off the CAPTCHA form but unfortunately I don't have access to this area of the tool.  So if you open a ticket from our Support staff send me the case number and I will be sure to keep tabs on it so that it is updated.  As for the best method of dealing with the possibility of fraudulent emails is to deal with them manually.  You can create a query that returns all new emails and you'll just have to spot check the list to see if you have any that appear fraudulent. The likelihood is that these emails will be fairly obvious so it shouldn't take too long to manage.  I'd suggest doing this on an every other week basis to start and then move to a monthly basis or even longer if it doesn't appear to be that prevalent.

    One thing to note -- in addition to CAPTCHA, all eCards include the following, which you'll see if you disable CSS:

    <span style="display:none">

    <table border="0"><tr><td>
    <label for="denySubmit">Spam Control Text:</label>&nbsp;
    <input type="text" name="denySubmit" id="denySubmit" value=""
    alt="This field is used to prevent form submission by scripts." />&nbsp;Please leave this field empty
    </td></tr></table>
    </span>

    If the form submission includes any value in this field, Convio will assume that the submission is spam and reject it. The idea is that this field would only be populated by a non-human that simply fills out all form fields.

    Hi Jonthan and all,

    Here is the support ticket case no.: 00239670 that I sent.  I do appreciate your help in getting this resolve.

    Your suggestion in finding fake email addresses is about what I thought it would be.  Many thanks for the help.

    Take care,

  • Hi Randy,

    I'm glad to hear that my fellow Convio colleagues were able to help you on this.  From a product perspective, thank you for sharing your feedback.  I have read through the W3C articule’s listing of possible solutions and conclusion.  We seem to lack the following with our visual + audio captcha approach:

    “and it will be necessary for sites like these to ensure that users with disabilities will have some human-operated means of interacting with a given resource in a reasonable amount of time”

    This is good information to know and the site suggests that limited-use accounts or federated identity systems as the possible solution alternative to the visual and audio captcha.

    Thank you again,

    Kevin Suer
